Interactive Kaleidoscope Exhibit

UX/UI Design & Exhibit Creative Direction | Throughline Client | February 2024

One of my favorite projects I’ve ever been a part of was a interactive, large-scale exhibit design for one of Throughline’s clients (client information redacted). The project was twofold: user-experience design for an iPad-based interface that would power the exhibit, and creative direction of the larger-scale project, which included a 9-foot wall installation that would display a customized kaleidoscope that reacted to the user’s iPad inputs.

The project began with extensive UX research and information architecture, during which I collaborated with a team of strategists to understand the client’s vision and explore the art of the possible. The goal of the project was to ask each user to input traits and attributes that contributed to who they are. We landed on a kaleidoscope metaphor for the large-scale output: For each attribute the user selected, a new dimension would be added to the visual on the screen in front of them.

I conducted the prototyping, user testing, and refinement of the iPad interface. At the same time, I brought on 3D artists and a Python developer, coordinating daily with them for months as we built a front- and back-end system that would allow the iPad to interact with a game engine. After months of extensive testing and iteration, I supervised the installation of the exhibit at the client’s site.

To date, this exhibit has generated the most engagement of all exhibits this client has ever hosted.
